The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet arrives in Qingdao after departing from Portsmouth, marking the start of the race’s China leg.
After 10 days at sea, all ten yachts competing in the 2025–2026 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race arrived in Qingdao on March 4th. Their arrival marks the start of the race’s China leg, CNS reported.
The fleet set sail from Portsmouth on August 31st, 2025. More than 700 crew members from around the world are taking part in this edition. Over the course of the race, they will cover about 40,000 nautical miles and stop at 13 ports.
Since its launch in 1996, the race has completed 14 editions. It is known for allowing non-professional sailors to take part in a full circumnavigation under professional leadership.
Qingdao’s Long Partnership with the Race
Qingdao became the first Asian stopover city for the race in 2006. Since then, the city has entered a yacht named “Qingdao” in ten consecutive editions. It has also served as a regular port of call for the fleet.
Each arrival features local welcome events. Traditional performances such as the yangko dance and lion dance take place at the dockside, adding a Chinese cultural element to the international competition.
A Local Sailor’s Return
Among the returning crew members was 30-year-old Lan Jun from Qingdao. Twelve years ago, she volunteered for the race when it stopped in the city. This season, she joined the team “Qingdao” as a full circumnavigation crew member.
“We left the UK and sailed more than 20,000 nautical miles before returning to Qingdao,” she said after docking. “I hope my coach and friends feel proud.”
After resupply and maintenance in Qingdao, the fleet will depart again on March 12th. The next stop is Tongyeong.
The global voyage will then continue across the Pacific and beyond.
