A giant dreamlike cat installation by Air Giants arrives at West Kowloon Cultural District for WestK FunFest 2026, offering an immersive outdoor art experience for visitors of all ages.
A giant cat has quietly appeared by the waterfront in West Kowloon Cultural District.
Stretching about 10 meters long, The Cat That Slept For A Thousand Years invites visitors into a playful, surreal world. The large outdoor installation blends light, sound, and soft movement. As people walk through it, the space seems to come alive.
The work is part of WestK FunFest 2026, a family-friendly arts event running through the Easter holiday until April 12th. Since opening, it has drawn a steady flow of visitors. Children run in and out. Young people stop for photos. Many stay longer than expected.
The installation comes from Air Giants, a UK-based studio known for large inflatable artworks. Their pieces often feel like living creatures.
What sets their work apart is how it is made. The team combines fabric with air to build what they call “soft robots.” These are not machines in a traditional sense. There are no hard edges or visible mechanics. Instead, the forms move slowly and softly, creating a sense of life.
Air Giants has presented its work at major cultural venues, including Tai Kwun and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Bringing this kind of installation outdoors makes the experience more open and direct.
The Cat That Slept For A Thousand Years fits this idea well. It is easy to approach and easy to enjoy. At the same time, it shows how art, design, and technology can come together in simple but surprising ways.
