China’s “Machine Wolves”: Robotic Dogs Join the Battlefield

China unveils “Machine Wolves,” four-legged robotic combat units for reconnaissance, fire support, and supply, reshaping the future battlefield.

On September 3, China’s latest four-legged combat robot, known as the “Machine Wolf,” appeared in a military parade. The futuristic robot quickly sparked heated discussions online.

What can it do?

The Machine Wolf is a four-legged unmanned combat system developed by CSGC. It first appeared at the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow and has now returned to the spotlight on the parade ground.

Besides, the robot can be remotely controlled or operate autonomously, using Chinese-made chips, two laser radars, and five cameras to achieve 360-degree awareness. In addition, it can carry up to 20 kilograms of supplies, travel 10 kilometres on a single charge, and run for 2.5 hours. Moreover, the battery can be swapped in just 30 seconds, and the robot can climb 40-degree slopes, step over 30 cm obstacles, and move across rubble with ease.

Upgraded for battle

Additionally, the new version is stronger than earlier “robot dogs” and comes in three combat roles: the Scout (Head Wolf), which collects battlefield data; the Shooter, equipped with a rifle for fire support; and the Support unit, which transports ammunition and gear. In action, these units operate in groups, each playing a specific role, creating a new “human-vehicle-wolf” system for modern combat.

Why does it matter?

Experts say Machine Wolves could be game-changers in urban warfare. They can enter tight or dangerous spaces where humans struggle to operate. They work in packs, share information, support troops, and change the way armies fight on the ground.

From “robot dogs” to “Machine Wolves,” China’s latest robots show how sci-fi ideas are moving closer to the battlefield.
