China Minutes: Most Read Articles of 2024

As 2024 draws to a close we check the numbers to present China Minute’s most-read articles of the year.

It feels like it only just started, but 2024 is almost over already. To celebrate the end of the year, we’ve put together the the most read articles published by China Minutes this year from movie reviews to local reporting and everything inbetween.

1)  Isha’s Song Lyrics English Translation: Arcane

During Arcane’s terrific season 2, a Chinese song is used in the closing credits of episode 6. Sung by Hong Kong singer and actor Eason Chang, the song is about the character Isha. Our article translates the lyrics of the song from Mandarin Chinese into English.

2) All the Mid-Autumn Festival Events in London

Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the biggest days in the Chinese calendar. With so many Chinese people living in London and plenty of non-Chinese Londerners who enjoy experiencing Chinese culture, we decided to put together an article with all the many Mid-Autumn Festival events in the capital. This seemed to be useful as it was our second-most-read article of the year.

3) Arcane Chinese Song: 这样很好 (Isha’s Song)

Arcane appears to have been very popular. As well as translating the lyrics for Isha’s song, we also wrote an article providing a bit of background on the song, its singer Eason Chang, and just how popular League of Legends is in China.

4) “You swan, he frog”: Heartbroken Foreign Blogger Finds Comfort in Chinglish Goodwill Messages

One of several articles we wrote covering what Chinese people are talking about on the internet (often referred to as ‘netizens’) this article explained the background to the viral Chinglish phrase ‘you swan, he frog’.

5) The Best Mooncakes to Buy in London

Another of our Mid-Autumn Festival articles, this article tried to share some advice regarding where to find the best Mooncakes in London. Mooncakes are a traditional food eaten and gifted during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and they are a must-try.

6) All the 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival Events Around the UK

While we may be based in London, we haven’t forgotten the rest of the UK. The final article to do with the Mid-Autumn Festival on this list is a roundup of all the many Mid-Autumn Festival events that were held around the UK.

7) Yunnan Mountain Gift Pop-Up Shop Celebrates Opening in London

One of our really important local journalism articles, this covered the opening party of the Mountain Gift pop-up shop near Kings Cross. The pop-up stocks a selection of Yunnan-related gifts, jewellery, and goods mainly produced by small London-based businesses.

8) Movie Review: China’s blockbuster comedy Successor arrives in the UK

Number eight on our list is a movie review. We got tickets for the UK premiere of Successor. A Chinese comedy about the extremes two parents would go to raise the perfect son.

9) Guanghwa Chinese Bookshop in London Chinatown Risks Closure

A really important, if frustrating article, we covered the exclusive that Guanghwa Bookshop in Chinatown risks closure due to a big rent increase. The only brick-and-mortar Chinese bookstore in the UK, it would be sad to see it go.

10) New Film Festival Brings Female-led Chinese Films to Scotland

The final article on our list is another movie-related one. Instead of a review, in this article, we sat down with the team behind the MINT film festival who put together a touring festival that would bring a selection of female-led Chinese films to Scotland.

This photo taken on Nov. 21, 2024 shows some hard copies of online Chinese novels during their inclusion event at the British Library in London, Britain. The British Library expanded its Chinese collection on Thursday by adding ten online novels by Chinese authors, including Lord of the Mysteries, Soul Land, and The Joy of Life. This follows the library's 2022 inclusion of its first batch of Chinese online literature. These novels, originally published on platforms operated by Yuewen, a Chinese online literature company, were donated to document the cultural significance and rapid development of internet literature in China.
