This summer, Du Mingyu, a “post-90s” traveller from Jiangsu, visited the Tibet Museum. After touring the exhibits, she found herself mesmerised by the museum’s gift shop. Tibetan carpet-patterned mouse pads, leaf-script bookmarks, and traditional mask fridge magnets caught her eyes.“History and tradition feel alive here,” Du said. “They are given new life in ways that feel fresh and modern.”
The Tibet Museum is the only national first-class museum in the region and the largest modern museum in Xizang. It is free and open to the public. In 2025, the museum celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Xizang autonomous region with a major renovation. It has since become a must-visit cultural landmark.
Immersive Experiences for Visitors
Since its opening in 1999, the museum has expanded its exhibitions. Traditional linear storytelling has given way to themed and immersive displays. For the 60th-anniversary celebration, the museum hosted “Auspicious Beginnings: Joint Exhibition of Artefacts from the Palace Museum and Xiang”, a collaboration with the Palace Museum in Beijing. This was the first time Palace Museum artefacts were displayed in Xizang. The exhibition featured 95 sets, totalling 114 precious items from four institutions, including the Tibet Museum, the Potala Palace, and Norbulingka.
In addition, the museum’s star exhibit is a double-bodied ceramic jar from the Karuo Ruins. Its unique shape resembles two guardian spirits embracing. This artefact has inspired a range of museum merchandise, including fridge magnets, bookmarks, and keychains, which attract young visitors and souvenir seekers alike.
Today, Xizang has 43 museums, ranging from comprehensive to specialised and monastery displays. Each offers a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history and culture. For visitors, the Tibet Museum combines learning with hands-on experience, making it a highlight of any trip to the region.
