China Releases First National Standard for Humanoid Robotics

China has unveiled its inaugural top-level design for the humanoid robot and embodied artificial intelligence (AI) standard system.

China took a significant step toward regulating its rapidly growing humanoid robotics industry. The country released its first national standard system covering the entire industrial chain and lifecycle of humanoid robots and embodied AI on Feb 28th.

The standard system comprises six key components – basic commonality, brain-like and intelligent computing, limbs and components, complete machines and systems, application, and safety and ethics.

The standards cover critical specifications for embodied intelligence’s “brain and cerebellum” and intelligent computing. They can regulate the entire data lifecycle and model training and deployment processes.

China’s booming humanoid robot sector

The standard system comes after China’s humanoid robot industry saw significant growth throughout 2025.

According to figures released in January, China has more than 140 humanoid robot manufacturers. The sector has been seeing a shift from laboratory prototypes to industrial competition and scenario-based deployment.

As production expands, industry leaders say unified standards are becoming increasingly important.

“To enable robots to truly work in real-world scenarios, industry-wide standards are indispensable,” Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree Robotics, said.

A representative of the Chinese robotics company MagicLab said that the standard system signifies the industry’s shift from a “technical breakthrough period” to a “systematic construction period.”

The year 2025 is considered China’s first year of humanoid robot mass production. Over 140 domestic manufacturers released more than 330 different models in 2025.
