China’s Sun Long claimed silver in the men’s 1,000m short track at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, earning his first Olympic medal and China’s first short track podium of the Games.

China’s Sun Long claimed silver in the men’s 1,000m short track speed skating final at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on February 12th. It marked the first medal for China’s short track team at the Games and the first Olympic medal of his career.

Sun finished in 1 minute 24.565 seconds, missing gold by just 0.028 seconds.

In a tightly contested A final, Sun trailed slightly at the start and was fourth midway through the race. He surged in the closing laps, overtaking multiple rivals with a powerful late sprint to move into medal position.

Dutch skater Jens van ’t Wout won gold, while 18-year-old South Korean skater Rim Jong-un took bronze.

Looking ahead, Sun and his teammates will compete in additional events, including the men’s 1,500m. He said the team would approach each round step by step and aim collectively to reach further finals.
