The Gate To Hogwarts Reopens in China

Harry Potter films have been re-released in China to the joy of Chinese fans.

Harry Potter fans in China have been returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry recently. Warner Bros. Pictures re-released all eight films in theatres nationwide starting from Oct.11.

The complete film collection will screen in more than 3,400 theatres across 295 Chinese cities. It will be available in formats including IMAX, Cinity and Dolby Cinema. This marks the first consecutive showing of all eight films on such a scale in China, highlighting the franchise’s enduring popularity.

The Warner Bros. re-release announcement has sparked nostalgia among many fans. Audiences also paid tribute to renowned actor Maggie Smith, who passed away recently and was beloved for her role as iconic Professor Minerva McGonagall.

With the films’ re-release, the hashtag #HarryPotterAllEightFilmsReReleasedinChina went viral on Chinese social media. The reading volume soared to over 120 million. Fans’ enthusiasm reflects the deep influence this story holds to people in China.

“Time flies. It has been over 20 years, and the adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione still resonate in my heart. This re-release fills me with excitement and anticipation,” a dedicated fan shared online.

On the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), Harry Potter fans posted their photos from the cinema.

Many viewers also expressed a desire to introduce this enchanting world to their children. They were eager to share that emotional connection to their children who never had the chance to watch the moives in cinema.

In cinemas, audiences transformed into devoted supporters of the wizarding world. Many brandishing wands and donning magical robes, showing their love for Harry Potter in various ways. This vibrant atmosphere not only draws older fans but also captivates the new generation. While many young audiences may not have seen the films at the original release, they are now eager to experience the magic world for themselves, and the re-release offers the perfect opportunity for their “magical baptism”.

The impact of the re-release is obvious. Tickets for many shows sold out during the pre-sale. After watching the film, an audience member from Beijing said that he is no longer thirteen but still feels like he is stepping back into the magical world.

Since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was introduced to China in 2002, the film series has accumulated a huge fan base. The cumulative box office of all eight films in China has reached 1.2 billion yuan. This performance demonstrates to industry insiders the unique market value of Harry Potter. It is irreplaceable in the hearts of fans.

Industry experts have high expectations for the re-release and predict the total box office may exceed 1 billion yuan, especially in the absence of strong competitors. So far this year the Chinese box office is down compared to last year. Despite summer hits like Succsesor, the summer box office was almsot 50% lower then 2023 while the normally financialy strong National Day holiday from October 1st to October 7th box office takings was 2.1 billion yuan ($380 million), down from 2.7 billion yuan in 2023.

The worldwide box office for the Harry Potter series has reached 7.8 billion US dollars, representing not only a financial milestone but also a cultural phenomenon. Harry Potter is more than a film, but a dream and youth of a generation of audiences.
