China will grant visa-free entry to holders of UK ordinary passports starting February 17th, 2026. The move allows stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, exchange programs and transit.
The policy will remain in place through December 31st, 2026.
Notably, the decision places the United Kingdom among more than 50 countries whose citizens already enjoy visa-free access to China, including France, Germany, Italy, Australia and Japan. As a result, travel rules for UK passport holders now align with a broader framework that China has extended to multiple partners.
Importantly, the visa-free announcement follows renewed high-level dialogue.
From January 28th to 31st, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid an official visit to China. It marked the first visit by a British prime minister in eight years. The trip underscored the interest of both sides in stabilising ties and expanding cooperation.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand during the Munich Security Conference. Although the meeting focused on China–Canada relations, it formed part of a broader round of diplomatic engagement taking place this winter.
Practical Impact for UK Travellers and Institutions
Meanwhile, the practical implications are clear. Business representatives, students and tourists from the UK will face fewer administrative steps when planning trips to China.
According to data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics, more than 600,000 UK residents travelled to China in 2024. Therefore, a significant number of travellers could directly benefit from the new arrangement.
In broader terms, smoother mobility often lays the groundwork for deeper economic and cultural cooperation. As political dialogue resumes, easier travel may help translate diplomatic contact into sustained exchanges between institutions, companies and communities in both countries.
