Xizang enters its “celebration moment” as locals and international visitors experience festive streets, cultural events, and the 60th anniversary of the Xizang Autonomous Region.
The city of Lhasa is buzzing with celebration ahead of the Xizang Autonomous Region’s 60th founding anniversary on August 21. Streets are decorated with colourful flags and banners, and festive energy fills the air.
Festive Spirit in Lhasa
French tourist Jean Francois explored the Barkhor Street and said, “The culture here is very different from Europe, but from my first impression, people seem to live happily.” He added, “I have visited China many times, and I wanted to experience more of the country’s rich cultures. The Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple left a deep impression on me.”
In recent days, Lhasa’s streets and public spaces have received a fresh makeover. Pedestrian bridges now feature decorative panels combining traditional Tibetan symbols, including snow-capped mountains, lotus flowers, ceremonial scarves, and linked hearts. Parks and intersections are adorned with vibrant blooms, brightening the cityscape. Near the Potala Palace, the newly opened Tuanjie Park offers visitors fresh views of the iconic landmark.
On Yutuo Road, which connects Jokhang Temple and the Potala Palace, the new night market has opened. Once Lhasa’s first paved road over 60 years ago, it has transformed into a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Small bars, souvenir shops, and cultural experience stores now line the street, offering a lively blend of shopping, dining, and Tibetan culture.
Six Decades of Progress
China’s Xizang Autonomous Region has also achieved remarkable socio-economic progress over the past six decades. In 2024, the region’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached 276.5 billion yuan, 154 times its size in 1965, with an average annual growth rate of 8.9%. Urban residents’ per capita disposable income rose to 55,444 yuan.
During a grand gathering in Lhasa marking the 60th anniversary, Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, highlighted these achievements as a testament to the region’s development and prosperity.
