Millions React to Video of Chinese Math Genius Wei Dongyi

Peking University responds to viral video of math professor Wei Dongyi, as millions express concern over his health and appearance.

A recent video of Peking University mathematics professor Wei Dongyi has sparked widespread concern on Chinese social media over his health and appearance. In the video, posted on his new social media account, Wei appears thin and missing several teeth, prompting netizens to question his well-being and call for better care from the university.

5-Second Video, 14.15M Likes

Though just five seconds long, the video quickly went viral. It received more than 14.15 million likes, 1.45 million comments, and 3.35 million shares, highlighting the depth of public attention and emotion.

On June 8th, Peking University’s School of Mathematical Sciences and the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research issued an official response. They confirmed that Wei suffers from a serious gum condition and has received regular medical checkups over the past three years. Other than oral health, his physical condition is stable, the school stated.

“We have always paid close attention to his health,” a university representative said, “We’ve arranged multiple hospital visits and consultations, and will continue to support his treatment going forward.”

The university also emphasized that it respects Wei’s lifestyle and preferences. It called on the public to help protect a quiet and focused environment for academic research.

Who is “God Wei”

Wei, 33, is recognized for his contributions to partial differential equations and geometric analysis. He graduated from Peking University and remained as a researcher and assistant professor. Wei has published several papers in top international journals and is widely regarded as a promising young scholar.

His modest appearance and strong academic abilities have made him a cult figure online, with many admiring his dedication to scholarship. Some call him “Wei Shen” — or “God Wei” — for his talent and unassuming personality.

Since opening his social media account, Wei has attracted more than 23 million followers.
