Pop Mart IPs Steal the Show

Pop Mart brought several of its iconic characters to the fair. At the Hong Kong Pavilion, the beloved doll Molly appeared in a recreated Hong Kong-style café, dressed as a barista. She served up “silk-stocking milk tea” to amused onlookers. Visitors lined up to take photos and experience the playful setting.

Molly’s creator, artist Kenny Wong, told China News Service that the character stands for resilience and breakthrough. He hopes Molly can inspire people to stay strong when facing future challenges. “Designer toys will be a key industry in the future,” he added.

Another Pop Mart favorite, the mischievous elf LABUBU, also drew attention. Special editions of the character, most of them globally limited, were on display at the Greater Bay Area Cultural Innovation Pavilion. Pop Mart’s recent performance reflects this growing interest: in the first quarter of 2024, its revenue in the Americas surged by 895–900% year-on-year, while European sales rose by 600–605%.

Diverse IPs with Cultural Roots

Beyond Pop Mart, other exhibitors also impressed with innovative toy designs.

At Hall 12, a towering 2-meter “God of Wealth” stood out. This metal designer toy blends traditional gold-and silver-smithing techniques with modern aesthetics. It features Chinese symbols like auspicious clouds and ruyi patterns, reinventing the image of the God of Wealth. The piece attracted attention from collectors, business leaders, and young visitors alike.

Haitian Culture presented “Tianji Rabbit,” a member of its “Superpowered Concert” IP series. The character combines AI-powered mechanical movement with the traditional craftsmanship of Zigong lantern-making, offering a fresh take on cultural heritage.

Panda-themed creative products also made a splash. Inspired by China’s national treasure, theses chubby panda characters fuse adorable design with street style. It has appeared in large art installations across China and continues to charm fans at every event.

China’s designer toy market is expanding rapidly both at home and abroad. Analysts predict the industry will reach a value of 100 billion yuan by 2026.
