China’s 618 Shopping Festival Expands Global Free Shipping

China’s major mid-year shopping event, the “618” festival, is back — and this year, it’s going even more global.

E-commerce giant Taobao has expanded its “Global Free Shipping” program to 12 countries and regions. These include Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, etc.

During the 618 festival, eligible shoppers in these areas can enjoy free shipping on qualifying orders. In addition, Taobao now offers a “local return” service. If customers are unsatisfied with their purchases, they can return items to a nearby pickup point in their country or region.

This move comes as more international users turn to Chinese e-commerce platforms for high-quality, affordable goods. In recent months, apps from several Chinese e-commerce companies have surged in overseas app store rankings. Global users actively share shopping tips and product recommendations on social media. Some even call it “reverse overseas shopping.”

Experts say this trend reflects growing trust in Chinese manufacturing, product quality, and brand value. Chinese sellers are also using these platforms to reach international buyers more directly. Multilingual versions of apps and international-friendly services are becoming the norm.

With “Made in China” and global free shipping combined, Chinese e-commerce is reshaping the cross-border shopping experience. For overseas shoppers, it means more choices, better prices, and easier returns.

The 618 festival runs through mid-June. Now is a great time to explore Chinese platforms and take advantage of deals made for global buyers.
