Celebrate the Huazhao Festival as Spring Arrives

As the temperature warms up and spring arrives, people are celebrating the Huazhao Festival (花朝节).

With a history of over 2,000 years, the Huazhao Festival is held in celebration of the flower goddess’ birthday. Since the climate varies in different parts of China, people hold celebrations on the second, 12th, or 15th day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

According to ancient beliefs, the flower goddess controlled the reproduction of mankind. Due to the agriculture-dominated economy in ancient China, it became a custom to celebrate the birthday of the flower goddess for prosperity.

Despite regional differences in celebrating, the Huazhao Festival usually shares several features. For example, people usually wear “hanfu,” the traditional Chinese attire to appreciate flowers.
