Fans Rejoice: Harry Potter Studio Tour In Shanghai Debut in 2027

The Harry Potter Studio Tour experience is going to China.

On January 12th, Jinjiang International announced that it had signed a joint venture framework agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery to build a “Harry Potter Studio Tour” in Shanghai. The joint venture agreement and project launch are still in the regulatory approval stage.

A Behind-the-Scenes Journey

This marks the first time the Harry Potter Studio Tour will be brought to China, following its success in London and Tokyo. The project will be located at Shanghai Jinjiang Action Park and is expected to open in 2027.

The project is planned to cover approximately 53,000 square meters, including both indoor and outdoor spaces. Visitors will embark on an immersive behind-the-scenes journey, viewing authentic costumes and props from the films, as well as interacting with engaging and innovative installations that bring iconic scenes to life. The full tour will take around half a day.

Starting January 26, 2025, Jinjiang Action Park will temporarily close for upgrades and renovations, which are expected to be completed by 2027. The renovation plan includes the development of the Harry Potter Studio Tour, the construction of a supporting landscape park, and the renovation of the Ferris wheel. The project aims to create a new cultural and tourism destination while preserving the park’s classic attributes in the city center.

The Harry Potter Studio Tour in Tokyo, which opened in 2023, cost $115 million and is the first indoor Harry Potter theme park in Asia and the largest in the world, second only to London.

Generations of Fans

Harry Potter enjoys immense popularity in China.

Since October last year, many Chinese cinemas have re-screened the Harry Potter films. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone earned 10.65 million yuan on its opening day.

At Universal Studios Beijing, young visitors often wear wizard robes, hold wands, and sport Hogwarts house scarves. They eagerly explore the Harry Potter-themed park. Casting spells, sipping butterbeer, and adopting a Hedwig are now standard experiences.

Additionally, many themed bars, cafes, and restaurants celebrate the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Although the Harry Potter books and films published over 20 years ago, the franchise remains highly influential. It continues to captivate generations of fans.
