Pets Mukbang: Spring festival is a time of celebrations with family including big meals, for some Chinese, they include their pets in the festivities. 

As the Spring Festival is approaching, families across China are gearing up for grand feasts. This year, their pets are not being left out. According to the 2025 Taobao Pets New Year’s Eve Dinner Report released recently, there’s a significant uptick in pet owners splurging on gourmet meals for their furry companions. The trend has sparked lively online discussions, especially around serving pets traditional dishes like dumplings and rice dumplings.

Enter Pets Mukbang, the latest Internet sensation where pets become the stars of eating shows. Originally mukbang started as a South Korean trend. It featured people eating large amounts of food on camera. The trend spread to China where you could earn a big paycheck by streaming yourself eating giant meals. Now, it includes animals like dogs, cats, ostriches, and even snails. Pet owners film their animals enjoying fancy meals. These meals range from dim sum to seafood platters. The videos are shared online, delighting viewers worldwide.

A Beijing-based pet restaurant, StarPets, is joining the trend. They offer a 10-course gourmet meal for pets. The menu includes appetizers and lamb-based main courses. The 2025 Taobao report shows more pet owners investing in festive meals. Traditional dishes like dumplings and rice dumplings are becoming popular for pets.

So, as you prepare your Spring Festival feast, consider setting a place at the table for your pet. After all, nothing says “Happy New Year” like a content cat savouring a shrimp dumpling or a delighted dog munching on a meat-filled rice dumpling.
