“城会玩” Cities Around China Welcome the New Year in Fancy Ways

With the changing of the year, many places in China welcome the New Year with special activities.

Hangzhou:Zouyun (走运)

“Happiness” “career luck” “wealth luck” “academic luck”……On January 1st, Hangzhou “post-00s” college student Chen Chen and his friends were walking along the section of the Grand Canalon in Hangzhou, starting a different way to welcome the New Year ——” Zouyun”. They measured this ancient and vibrant river with their footsteps, enjoying the scenery of the Grand Canal along the way, and wishing a good luck.

Fireworks

Hongkong:Fireworks Display

On January 1st, the New Year Countdown Fireworks Display with the theme of “The Symphony of Happiness” was staged over Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong.

The 12-minute show features four stunning fireworks effects, including “Blooming Blossoms” “Evergreen Tree” “Golden Waterfall,” and for the first time in Hong Kong, “Propitious Clouds.”

Moreover, inspired by nature, the display revealed the myriad states and stages of the five natural elements – metal, wood, water, fire and earth.

Datong: Cultural Lantern Festival

The 2025 New Year Ancient Capital Lantern Festival was launched on the evening of December 31st, 2024 in Datong, Shanxi.

This lantern festival has a total of eight themed lantern areas. For instance, the lantern groups cover the history and culture of Datong, the images of national trend figures, the creative lantern groups of the Year of the Snake, etc.

On January 1st, in the Songcheng Scenic Area in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, intangible cultural heritage performances were staged during the “Carnival for the Year of China”, such as fish lantern parades and dragon dances.

On January 1st, people wore Hanfu, horse-faced skirts and other traditional Chinese costumes at the Grand Bazaar Pedestrian Street in Urumqi, Xinjiang, welcoming the first day of the New Year.

Great Wall

Beijing: Climbing the Great Wall

On January 1st, the Juyongguan Great Wall Vertical Challenge kicked off. 2,000 runners set off in batches to enjoy sports while praying for the New Year.

Lhasa

Lhasa: the First Ray of Sunshine

On January 1st, tourists checked in with the first ray of sunshine at the Yaowang Mountain in Lhasa, Xizang. The picture shows tourists taking photos with the Potala Palace after sunrise.

Wuhan

Wuhan: Flying Balloons

On December 31st, 2024, Wuhan, Hubei Province, the New Year atmosphere was strong on Hankou Yanjiang Avenue. In addition, many citizens and tourists gathered in front of Jianghan Pass to welcome the arrival of the 2025. The picture shows people releasing balloons.
