From 29th October to 4th November, the work of Chinese artist Qi Yang will be on display at Sotheby’s Wemyss Gallery.
The exhibition of Qi Yang’s work showcases his blend of Zen philosophy with German Expressionism. The German-Chinese artist has gained international acclaim for blending his artistic vision with philosophical influences from China.
Among the works in this exhibition is the “Lotus Meditation” by Qi Yang. The piece features a striking figure with a red face and expressive blue lines, suggesting the flow of energy and the serenity found in meditation. The warm tones of the figure’s hat contrast with the cooler hues, creating a dynamic yet harmonious composition.
The exhibition runs from 29th October to 4th November. It is held at the Wemyss Gallery at Sotheby’s in London.
It is organised by Art China. They predict it will be “a captivating journey into the fusion of Zen philosophy and Expressionist art.”
Qi Yang graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Anhui Normal University in 1982 and moved to Germany in 1987 through an art exchange program between Shanghai University, College of Fine Arts, and the Berlin University of the Arts. He earned a Doctorate of Philosophy from the Art History Institute of Heidelberg University from 1990 to 1996.
Since 1989, Qi Yang’s work has been collected by the British Museum. He has held over fifty solo exhibitions, including notable shows at Museum Villa Rot, Burgrieden, Germany, 2001, the National Art Museum in Beijing in 2005, the Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, Germany, 2006, and the Duolun Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai in 2013. His innovative approach and artistic excellence led to his shortlisting for the prestigious Wolfgang Hahn Prize at the Cologne Ludwig Museum in 2021.
