Fish Lanterns Light Up Ancient Village in Anhui

Experience the vibrant Huizhou fish lantern parade in Zhanqi Village, Shexian County, Anhui. Traditional lanterns, festive rituals, and local culture bring the ancient village to life this Spring Festival.

As the Spring Festival approaches, Zhanqi Village in Beian Town, Shexian County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, comes alive with the traditional fish-lantern parade. Visitors gather along the narrow streets to watch the glowing lanterns move gracefully through the ancient alleys.

The parade has become a regular event. People touch the fish lantern’s head for good luck, hoping for a year without worries. The streets come alive with festive sounds, and everyone—locals and visitors alike—immerses themselves in the vibrant Spring Festival atmosphere.

The largest lanterns are truly impressive. Each one can reach up to 7 meters in length and requires more than 20 people to carry. When the red candles inside are lit, the lanterns shine brightly, creating a magnificent spectacle.

Moreover, the parade is full of traditional rituals. Lanterns change formation with rhythmic gongs, performing “carp tail swings” and “fish leaping over the dragon gate.” When the procession reaches the village shrine, the lanterns slowly bow in a ritual to honour ancestors. This moment reflects the villagers’ respect for tradition and their hope for family unity.

In recent years, Huizhou fish lanterns have gained wider attention. They now inspire short dramas and more than 500 themed products, including stationery, tea sets, and scented sachets. Lanterns also appear in cafés, guesthouses, and even mobile games. As a result, “visit Shexian County to see fish lanterns” has become a popular travel trend.

Overall, the fish lantern parade preserves local culture while bringing ancient streets to life.
