George Russell Wins Australian Grand Prix for Mercedes

George Russell secures victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, leading Mercedes to a dominant season opener with teammate Kimi Antonelli second and Charles Leclerc third.

On March 8th, local time, the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix took place at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit. George Russell of Mercedes crossed the finish line first, completing 58 laps in 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 6.801 seconds.

Russell said after the race: “It was a great day. We knew there was a lot of potential in the car, but until you reach that first Saturday of the season, you never really know. It really came alive this afternoon.”

Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli from Italy finished second, despite crashing heavily in the final practice session. Antonelli praised his team: “In FP3, I went into the wall, but the mechanics were heroes to put the car back on track. We couldn’t even set up the car; we just went out and managed to put it in the front row. I’m really happy with that.”

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, representing Monaco, took third place, followed by the two McLaren drivers.

Russell’s victory strengthens Mercedes’ status as a championship favourite for the 2026 season. The race featured intense battles, strategic pit stops, and challenging track conditions, but Russell kept control throughout and secured a clear win.

On March 12th, Formula 1 drivers and teams, including George Russell, began arriving at the Shanghai International Circuit to prepare for the Chinese Grand Prix, which will take place this weekend.
