Discover Chongqing’s “8D Magic City” with its futuristic architecture and iconic spots like Li Zi Ba and the Bus Through Building.
A visitor from Singapore once said, “One building’s first floor might be another building’s fifteenth floor. The layered cityscape of Chongqing is truly impressive.” This unusual layout gives the city a striking, almost cinematic quality, which has drawn growing attention from international travellers.
In recent years, social media has played a major role in turning Chongqing into a global hotspot. Its charm comes from a unique “cyberpunk” atmosphere, where futuristic architecture blends seamlessly with natural wonders such as the Yangtze River and Dazu Rock Carvings. The city’s buildings, perched on steep hills and connected by winding streets, create what locals call an “8D magic city,” offering breathtaking views at every turn.
Recently, the new “Bus Through Building” attraction opened at Meixin Wine Town in Fuling. A bus seems to hover on the exterior wall of a building, giving the illusion of driving straight through it. The effect is visually striking and has quickly become a hotspot for tourists seeking the “8D magic” experience.
The city’s earlier hit, the famous “Train Through Building” at Li Zi Ba Station, had already captured international attention. Social media buzzed with videos of trains passing through the building, thrilling visitors who compared the experience to the excitement of enjoying a spicy hotpot. Together, these attractions showcase Chongqing’s playful and visually bold urban design.
Resident Zhang Yutong shared her perspective with CNS: “I never really understood why Li Zi Ba was so popular. This new spot is interesting. I went from a sceptic to a visitor myself.” She added that the views are great, and visitors can enjoy a relaxing Citywalk along the river after taking photos.
