Xuefei Yang to Illuminate Shakespeare’s Globe with Candlelit Recital

Xuefei Yang to give a classical guitar recital by candlelight at the Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe in December.

Xuefei Yang, hailed as “One of the most extraordinary instrumentalists in the world” by the New York Sun and recognized as “One of the 100 Best Artists of Our Time” by Classic FM, is set to grace the stage at the Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe, for a captivating candlelit recital on Monday, December 11 at 7:30 pm.

Renowned for her unparalleled artistry on the classical guitar, Xuefei Yang’s concert promises to be a luminous celebration of the winter season. The performance will weave together a rich tapestry of musical genres, featuring Chinese classics such as “Three Variations on Plum Blossom” and “White Snow in the Spring Sunlight,” alongside Western masterpieces like Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and the iconic guitar piece “Recuerdos de la Alhambra.”

The historic venue, boasting an all-wood interior adorned with decorative features and a painted ceiling reminiscent of candlelit theatres from the time of William Shakespeare, serves as a unique backdrop for this special event. Once again opening its doors to live music enthusiasts, the Playhouse is London’s sole indoor candlelit theatre, adding an extra layer of charm to Xuefei’s performance.

Xuefei Yang, a trailblazer in the world of classical guitar, is no stranger to Shakespeare’s Globe stage, having previously captivated audiences with celebrated English tenor Ian Bostridge. This eagerly anticipated concert not only marks a triumphant return for Xuefei but also signifies the venue’s resumption of live music since the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born in Beijing, Xuefei Yang made history as the first guitarist to enter a formal music school in China and the first to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. A recipient of a full scholarship from the UK’s ABRSM, she continued her post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Represented by the leading UK music agency Askonas Holt, Xuefei’s career has blossomed, encompassing performances in over 54 countries, both solo and with major orchestras. Her celebrated recordings for major labels such as EMI, Decca, and Deutsche Grammophon have solidified her status as a musical ambassador for the rich heritage of Chinese music and culture.

Tickets for this enchanting candlelit recital are available at Shakespeare’s Globe’s official website, promising an unforgettable evening of warmth, hope, and joy, as Xuefei Yang’s guitar melodies illuminate the Playhouse.
