China’s AS700 “Xiangyun” manned airship has received China’s first production certificate, marking the start of mass production.
The Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) announced on Dec. 30th that its independently developed AS700 “Xiangyun” manned airship has received the country’s first production certificate for domestically developed manned airships from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). This achievement marks the official start of mass production for China’s first manned airship, built to meet airworthiness standards, according to CNS.
The AS700 has a maximum takeoff weight of 4,150 kg and can carry up to nine passengers. It is ideal for aerial sightseeing, surveying, and aerial photography. Each flight can last up to 10 hours and cover a maximum distance of 700 kilometres.
Since early 2024, the AS700 team has conducted over 187 test flights in various operational scenarios, accumulating a total of 602 flight hours. In addition, they have set up a complete quality control system covering raw material sourcing, component manufacturing, full assembly, and factory testing. This ensures the airship is ready for industrial-scale production.
The large-scale deployment of the AS700 will strengthen China’s civil aviation manufacturing ecosystem. Moreover, it will provide new solutions for low-altitude tourism, urban security, and cultural and leisure industries.
