Hong Kong places eight universities in the top 100 in Asia in the Times Higher Education 2026 rankings, with strong performance across major institutions.
The 2026 Asia university rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE) show that eight universities from Hong Kong are now in the top 100, up from six last year, HKCNA reported.
Among them, the University of Hong Kong ranked 6th in Asia, the highest in the city. The Chinese University of Hong Kong ranked 10th.
Several other institutions were also placed within the top 20. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranked 12th, the City University of Hong Kong ranked 14th, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked 18th. Hong Kong Baptist University moved to 40th.
In addition, two universities entered the ranking for the first time. The Education University of Hong Kong ranked 37th, while Lingnan University ranked 84th.
Broad Representation Across Institutions
The results cover different types of universities, including research-focused and teaching-oriented institutions.
According to THE, a total of 929 universities from 36 countries and regions were included in this year’s ranking. The evaluation is based on indicators such as teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry income.
In Asia overall, universities from mainland China continue to hold several top positions, while rankings among leading institutions remain relatively stable.
Ongoing Efforts to Build an Education Hub
At the policy level, the Hong Kong SAR government has promoted the “Study in Hong Kong” initiative in recent years. The plan aims to attract more international students and strengthen the city’s role in higher education.
At the same time, development plans in the Northern Metropolis include proposals for a new university cluster near the Shenzhen border. This area is expected to support collaboration with cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Observers note that Hong Kong’s higher education system combines international academic practices with close links to mainland China. Some universities have also developed research projects that bring together traditional Chinese medicine and modern technology.
