At the first World Expo in London during 1851, Jili Lake Silk from Zhejiang, China, was introduced to the world and won a Gold award.
Jili Lake Silk is a type of mulberry silk that has existed for hundreds of years. It is named after Jili village near Huzhou city in Zhejiang province of China where it is produced. At the first World Expo held in London, Britain in 1851, an adventurous Chinese businessman showcased Jili Lake Silk. It won China’s first World Expo Gold Award and showcased this exquisite Chinese silk to Britain, and the world. The award was personally given by Queen Victoria.
At the Nanxun Jili Lake Silk Museum, located in the ancient town of Nanxun in Huzhou, the story of Jili Lake Silk and the 1851 World Expo in London is told.
