This year’s Spring Festival film lineup is diverse and dynamic, spanning genres such as martial arts, fantasy, comedy, action, suspense, and military drama.

Watching films during the Spring Festival has become an integral part of Chinese social and entertainment culture. According to the China Film Administration, as of February 5, the total box office revenue for the 2025 Spring Festival season reached a record-breaking 9.51 billion yuan, with 187 million moviegoers—the highest attendance ever recorded during this holiday period in Chinese film history.

The festival’s film slate features several highly anticipated titles, including the sequel to China’s all-time box office champion Ne Zha 2, the comedy-suspense-action film Detective Chinatown 1900, the mythological epic Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, the military war drama Operation Hadal, the animated adventure Boonie Bears: Future Reborn, and the martial arts spectacle The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Hero.

Technology Upgrade and Iteration

All six films are major productions with significant investments, boasting top-tier creative teams, visually stunning set designs, and cutting-edge technology. Industry experts believe these films collectively showcase the remarkable progress in China’s film industrialization.

Notably, five of the six films are sequels to established IP franchises. Their predecessors were both box office hits and critically acclaimed, securing strong fan bases. Analysts suggest that Chinese IP films may have moved beyond the early stage of simple replication and are now entering a phase of multidimensional evolution.

The standout success of this season is Ne Zha 2, which topped the Spring Festival box office. With earnings exceeding 5 billion yuan, it now ranks fifth in mainland China’s all-time box office charts. Reports highlight that the film features three times as many characters as its predecessor and nearly 2,000 special effects shots. From intricate animation details to large-scale scene rendering, Ne Zha 2 is widely regarded as a testament to the significant advancements in China’s animation industry in recent years.
