Shanghai Disney Breaks Ground on Spider-Man Land

Shanghai Disney Resort began construction on May 19th, on a new Spider-Man-themed land. This major expansion reflects growing global investment in China’s theme park industry.

Located next to Zootopia, the new area will feature the park’s first major Marvel-themed ride. The attraction is a high-energy roller coaster starring Spider-Man, one of Marvel’s most popular superheroes.

Currently, Shanghai Disney Resort draws over 14 million visitors each year. The Spider-Man land will become the park’s ninth themed area. In addition, it marks the third major expansion since the park opened in 2016. Previous expansions include Disney·Pixar Toy Story Land in 2018 and Zootopia in 2023.

According to a press release, “Guests will be surrounded by Spider-Man and friends with shopping, food, and entertainment experiences that extend the story.”

Meanwhile, the resort is also building a third Disney-themed hotel to meet rising demand.

The company revealed these updates on May 19 to celebrate China Tourism Day.

Across the country, China’s theme park industry continues to attract global investors. Its large population, rising disposable incomes, and the merging of culture and tourism fuel this growth.

More Global Brands Enter China

Following earlier successes, such as Shanghai Disney Resort and Universal Beijing Resort, more global brands are entering the market. They aim to meet increasing demand from young people and families for fun, immersive travel experiences.

For example, LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort—the world’s largest LEGOLAND—will open in July this year. In addition, Warner Bros is working with Jin Jiang International Holdings Co., Ltd. to launch a “Making of Harry Potter” studio tour at Shanghai Jinjiang Action Park. An outdoor Peppa Pig theme park is also in development.

Looking ahead, China is prioritizing domestic demand and consumer spending. Local governments are focusing on cultural and tourism projects. These sectors have shown the fastest recovery in recent months, said Li Changan, a professor at the University of International Business and Economics.

According to the 2025 Government Work Report of China, the government will fast-track major investment projects. It also plans to foster new forms of cultural business and rapidly expand the tourism industry.
