Picasso Through the Eyes of Paul Smith Opens in Shanghai

Discover the international exhibition “Picasso Through the Eyes of Paul Smith” at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai. Explore 80 masterpieces from Picasso’s career, including the debut of “Bull’s Head”, presented through British designer Paul Smith’s immersive vision.

On Dec.18th, the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) opens the year-end international exhibition Picasso Through the Eyes of Paul Smith. This is the first stop of the global tour and the only venue in China. The exhibition is co-organised with the Musée national Picasso-Paris. It offers a complete overview of Pablo Picasso’s artistic career from his early works to his later masterpieces.

The show features around 80 works from the Picasso Museum in Paris. Visitors can see paintings, sculptures, watercolours, ceramics, and prints. Together, they provide the most comprehensive Picasso survey ever staged in China. In short, it is a rare chance to explore the depth and creativity of one of the world’s most influential artists.

A key highlight is the Chinese debut of Bull’s Head (1942). Picasso made this iconic “found object” work from a bicycle saddle and handlebars. It demonstrates his playful experimentation and ability to turn everyday objects into art.

British designer Paul Smith adds a fresh perspective to the exhibition. Known for his use of colour, patterns, and stripes, Smith has designed the exhibition space as an immersive visual journey. Visitors can experience the artworks in a vibrant and engaging setting. In his view, the exhibition space itself becomes part of the artistic experience.

Overall, the show combines the genius of Picasso with the creativity of Paul Smith. It invites visitors to explore, reflect, and enjoy art in a contemporary way.
