J-15T Fighter: What’s New in China’s Latest Carrier Aircraft?

China’s new J-15T carrier-based fighter made its public debut aboard the Shandong aircraft carrier in Hong Kong. The upgraded jet signals advances in naval aviation and combat capability.

On July 7, China’s aircraft carrier Shandong and its escort fleet left Hong Kong after a five-day visit. During the visit, the new J-15T carrier-based fighter was opened to the public for the first time on the flight deck, drawing major attention. The display area for the J-15 and J-15T also became a popular photo spot for visitors.

The J-15 is China’s first fixed-wing carrier-based fighter. The newer J-15T is a single-seat, heavy fighter designed for carrier operations. It serves as a key part of China’s carrier strike group. The J-15T made its public debut at last year’s Airshow China. Two J-15T fighters and one J-15D electronic warfare jet performed a formation flight, showcasing carrier-specific maneuvers such as buddy refueling and arrested landings.

Sun Cong, the chief designer of the J-15, said the aircraft has been evolving since its first flight. Compared to earlier versions, the J-15T offers significantly improved combat performance.

Looking ahead, Sun believes China’s carrier-based aircraft will become more intelligent with advances in technology. He predicts future fighters may operate as part of an unmanned combat system and will likely incorporate artificial intelligence.
