Camden Chinese New Year festival will celebrate the Year of the Snake
On Saturday, February 1st Chinese New Year celebrations will debut at Camden Market. Brought to Camden by the team behind last year’s Yunnan Cultural Festival, this Spring Festival will see Camden Market covered with a strong Chinese red for the first time. The festival will be held from 1pm – 5pm.
It will feature a huge variety of cultural performances, workshops, and market stalls.
Some of the performance highlights include Lion dance, Sichuan opera face-changing, Shaolin Kung Fu, traditional folk music performance and more. One special performance will come from the Guizhou Acrobatic Troupe, which will present challenging acrobatic shows and costume magic shows.
For craft lovers, there is also plenty to enjoy. Craft workshops include: lacquer fan making, face painting, calligraphy experience and lantern making.
There will even be an opportunity to play the famous Chinese game of Mahjong.
Like the Yunnan Cultural Festival, there will be a Chinese themed pop-up market at Camden for the festival. There you can find exquisite intangible cultural heritage velvet flowers and ceramic jewelry, ancient Chinese style Hanfu, and crispy and delicious Chinese snacks, taking you to a wonderful world where tradition and fashion blend together.
Another unique addition to the festival will be a Chinese costume parade. We have teamed up with Yungui Hanfu and the British Hanfeng Society to bring you a super exciting Chinese costume parade! Models and bloggers wearing Hanfu and ethnic minority costumes will stroll together in Camden Market, stunning the streets of London with the unique beauty of the East.
Parts of Camden will also receive a makeover for the festivities. Streets will be turned into dreamy lantern alleys, while interesting zodiac stickers and Chinese characters will appear. Shu Yang, who graduated from Goldsmiths University in London, has created a snake art installation which will hover over the Camden Market building. Meanwhile, artist QiQi brings the interactive art installation “Shadow of Shanshan”, which brings infinite reverie with mysterious and implicit Chinese aesthetics. The retro bridge hole incorporates Chinese elements, and the collision of classics and oriental aesthetics creates a unique spark. Finally, the Food Building has a special “Chinese Courtyard”.
