Hurlingham Polo Association will host the Coronation Cup, where England play Uruguay, at Guards Polo Club on Saturday 25 July.
Alongside the England-Uruguay match, one of the most exclusive fixtures of the English summer, the impressive Young England team will face their arch-rivals Young Argentina in the morning’s Whitbread Trophy match. This is the third successive time the teams have met, with one win apiece, so there will be all to play for.
A Ground Steeped in History
Guards Polo Club, where the competition takes place, carries a particular resonance. It was at Smiths Lawn that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, became the driving force behind the founding of Guards Polo Club in 1955, cementing its place at the heart of the royal game. HM King Charles III succeeded his father as President of Guards Polo Club in 2024, continuing the family’s long association with the sport.
Often called “the sport of kings,” polo is one of the world’s oldest team games, played on horseback and codified in its modern form by the Hurlingham Polo Association in 1875. Two teams, mounted on agile polo ponies, compete to drive a ball through the opposing goal – a fast, elegant contest of horsemanship, precision and nerve. It is the sport from which Hurlingham Polo 1875 takes both its name and its heritage.
Fashion Showcase on the Day
On the day of the Coronation Cup, Hurlingham Polo will also host a fashion show for its hospitality guests, showcasing the best of the Hurlingham Polo brand.
For Hurlingham Polo, founded in 1875, everything begins with the horse. The trust between horse and human is the foundation of the sport and the brand’s deepest point of reference. Every piece is hand-finished and designed by a British team drawn from heritage houses including Burberry, McQueen and Saint Laurent. They combine the codes of the field with a considered luxury register. The brand draws continuously on its 150-year archive of polo books, photographs and documents, ensuring every collection keeps a direct line to British history.
Hurlingham Polo is also committed to the future of the game: a percentage of proceeds from all sales is invested back into the sport.
