Best Chinese Universities 2026 Ranked by ShanghaiRanking

The best Chinese universities 2026 have been revealed by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, with Tsinghua University in first place.

On April 15th, 2026, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy officially released its ranking of the best Chinese universities. 

What are the best universities in China?

Unsurprisingly, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University took the first three spots on the main list. This maintains their positions as the top three universities in China for the 12th consecutive year. Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University to complete the remainder of the top five.

Rankings were also supplied for several significant education sectors. Peking Union Medical College retained its top position in the medical university ranking, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics ranked first in the finance and economics university ranking, Beijing Foreign Studies University took first in the language university ranking, while China University of Political Science and Law won the championship in the political science and law university ranking. Finally, Shanghai University of Sport continued to lead the sports university ranking.

Some of the university rankings were very China-specific. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine won the crown for traditional Chinese medicine universities, and Minzu University of China ranked first in the ethnic minority university ranking.

What are the best universities to study Chinese in China? 

For foreigners interested in studying Chinese in China, there were also rankings for the best Chinese language universities in China.

The top five universities for Chinese language were Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Communication University of China, China Foreign Affairs University, and Beijing Language and Culture University.

Who are ShanghaiRanking?

ShanghaiRanking is a professional evaluation agency for higher education based in China and releases yearly rankings on Chinese universities.

The “ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities,” formerly known as the “Shanghai Ranking of Best Chinese Universities,” first started in 2015. It has become a leading brand of Chinese university rankings. The rankings have a significant influence in mainland China and is recognised by many universities as an important measure of success.

The full rankings cover more than 1,000 undergraduate universities in China.

The evaluation system comprises multiple evaluation aspects. Cheng Ying, founder of ShanghaiRanking, explained: “The ShanghaiRanking’s Chinese University Rankings are guided by reflecting the core mission of contemporary Chinese universities and responding to the external community’s expectations of universities. Emphasis on talent cultivation and service to the nation are the two most important characteristics of the ShanghaiRanking’s indicator system.”
