China Universities Shine in THE Rankings 2026

In the latest world’s top university rankings of Times Higher Education, universities from China took 12th and 13th.

The annual university rankings published by British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) on Oct. 9 listed 97 institutions from Chinese mainland, an increase from 94 institutions last year.

Tsinghua University once again ranked 12th in the world, continuing to lead universities in Chinese mainland and Asia.

Peking University took 13th for the second consecutive year. Fudan University came 36th.

The number of Chinese mainland universities in the THE’s global top 40 increased to five, up from three last year. New entrants include Zhejiang University (jumping from joint 47th to 39th) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (rising from 52nd to 40th).

The University of Science and Technology of China and Nanjing University ranked 51st and 62nd, respectively.

Universities in Hong Kong and Macau Perform Well

Eight universities in Hong Kong made the list, with five among the top 100.

The University of Hong Kong maintains top among Hong Kong institutions, ranking 33rd, up two places.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong ranks 41st, up three places. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology climbs eight places to 58th. City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked 75th and 83rd, respectively.

Three universities in Macau made the list, with one university entering the top 150 for the first time.

The University of Macau rose up 35 places to 145th, entering the top 150 for the first time. The Macau University of Science and Technology ranked 251-300.The City University of Macau made the list for the first time this year, ranking 601-800.

The University of Oxford in the UK has secured the top. Massachusetts Institute of Technology taking second and Princeton University coming joint third with Cambridge.
