Worldwide Support for China’s Anti-Epidemic Efforts

While the Chinese people are striving for victory in the battle against the novel coronavirus outbreak, heads of international organizations as well as people of different sectors across the globe have expressed their support for China’s efforts in fighting the deadly virus. They have commended the measures the country has taken in preventing and controlling the epidemic, acclaiming that China’s tremendous efforts have positively contributed to the global and regional public health security.

Strengthening Cooperation with China

Antonio Guterres

UN Secretary-General

The United Nations stands firmly with the Chinese government and its people, has full confidence in China’s ability to prevent and control the outbreak, and is willing to provide China with all possible support and assistance.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Director-General of World Health Organization

China’s approach reflects openness, transparency, and international cooperation. Chinese government is doing its best every day to protect the Chinese people not only for its own sake but also for the world’s. China deserves the international community’s gratitude and respect. China needs the world’s solidarity and support. WHO is working closely with the Chinese government on measures to understand the virus and limit transmission.

In our fractured and divided world, health was one of the few areas in which international cooperation offered the opportunity for countries to work together for a common cause. This is a time for facts, not fear. This is a time for rationality, not rumours. This is a time for solidarity, not stigma.

Nicholas Rosellini

UN Resident Coordinator in China

I want to emphasize the need for international solidarity, and to support China and those other countries that might be impacted in these difficult circumstances. Importantly, we must avoid the stigmatization of people that are victims of the situation. At the United Nations, we are working very closely with the Chinese authorities. We continue to have confidence in China’s capacity to respond to this outbreak.

Kristalina Georgieva

Managing Director of International Monetary Fund

The Chinese authorities are working to mitigate the negative impact on the economy, with crisis measures, liquidity provision, fiscal measures, and financial support. While the impact of the epidemic continues to unfold, the WHO’s assessment is that with strong and coordinated measures, the spread of the virus in China and globally can yet be contained. We are still learning about how this complex virus spreads and the uncertainties are too great to permit reliable forecasting. Global cooperation is essential to the containment of the COVID-19 and its economic impact, particularly if the outbreak turns out to be more persistent and widespread.

David Malpass

President of World Bank Group

I would like to express my sympathy to the government and people of China for the losses suffered from the novel coronavirus outbreak. This is a severe public health challenge for China and the rest of the world. It calls for ongoing coordinated action and continued transparency inside China and around the world. The World Bank Group stands ready to support the Government’s efforts in containing the spread of the virus. The World Bank Group stands together with the people of China at this challenging time.

Achim Steiner

Administrator of United Nations

Development Program

I am heartened by the efforts that the Chinese government is making to rein in this challenging threat to public health in China and around the globe. The contribution that frontline health and emergency services at the epicenter of the epidemic in China are making and the determination of the Chinese people deserve our admiration.

Standing Together with China

Amapola Grijalva

Executive President of the China-Mexico Chamber of Commerce and Technology

We must thank the Chinese health authorities for the information they have shared, because we can therefore protect ourselves and decide whether to travel to a certain area or not.

I am convinced that the Chinese government, in its full capacity and structure, has taken the protection of our health and the security of each and every one of us, as its main priority.

Luis Monsalve Hoyos

Ambassador of Colombia in China

From Colombia, we have witnessed China´s responsible and efficient management, paying the utmost attention to not only its own nationals, but also to foreign citizens. The government and people of Colombia are looking out for China, supporting all of the immense efforts that it has taken during these difficult times. Zhongguo jiayou! (Let´s go China!) Wuhan Jiayou! (Let´s go Wuhan!)

Evandro Menezes de Carvalho

Executive Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian edition of China Today and professor with Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro

China’s responses to the epidemic outbreak have presented a valuable experience to the world. Now, cooperation with China is needed to show our respect to this great nation, but more importantly, to strengthen international ties, and optimize our respective national health defense mechanisms.

Alistair Michie

Secretary General of British East Asia Council

This is a most challenging and distressing time for all the people of China. We know that the people of China have exceptional resilience and determination in times of hardship and crisis. From this knowledge we know that China will recover very fast from this current challenge. We send our very warmest wishes and strongest support!

Mansour Abul-Azm

Executive Chief Editor of Ahram Newspaper

We should stand together with China, take scientific and rational measures, and minimize its negative impact on the manufacturing industry in China. Only with these effective measures can we prevent the world economy from slumping further. I believe China will soon be back to its journey of national rejuvenation.

Appreciating China’s Efforts and Transparency

Anne Schuchat

Principal Deputy Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

We need to be grateful for the speed in which scientists in China posted the genetic sequence and the extreme measures that are being placed in Hubei Province which have probably delayed the spread of the virus to other areas.

Walter Ian Lipkin

Professor of epidemiology and Director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health

Scientists around the world, and specifically speaking for the United States, want to work hand in hand with Chinese scientists to create vaccines, drugs, and diagnostic tests to address this outbreak and reduce the disease and death among the Chinese people.

Keiji Fukuda

Japanese influenza epidemiology expert

We have seen the great efforts China has made to limit the spread of the virus and the movement of the people to an extent that the WHO has never seen before. I think China really deserves a lot of credits for slowing the spread of this deadly virus. In addition, we have seen that China has done a very large number of scientific studies which clearly show that China’s scientific capabilities are world-class.

Eric d’Ortenzio

Researcher at the French Institute of Health and Medical Research

We have seen that about fifty virus gene sequences have been published online, making it possible for us to analyze the virus-related information in real time and compare it with other sequences of the virus. Therefore, China ’s very transparent sharing of data is important in line with the “data sharing” principle.

Fabrizio Pregliasco

Virologist in the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health at the University of Milan

The detailed reports on viral behavior and infected cases published by the Chinese government are useful for us in fighting together against the virus within the framework of the WHO. We can feel the transparency and the dedication that the Chinese government has shown in its fight against this epidemic, which is crucial at this stage.
