The central government has unveiled a closely watched guideline aimed at increasing the nation's annual food yield by more than 50 million metric tons by 2030, with corn and soybean productivity being the focus, according to the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planner.
Corn and soybeans will be the major contributors of the grain output increase, the plan said. In terms of rice and wheat, the emphasis is on improving quality and optimizing structure.
China's food yield data is genuine and reliable, Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Tang Renjian reassured the public on 5th of March, after authorities reported grain output reached a historical high last year despite a string of extreme weather events.
To ensure absolute security, food supply was listed as one of the two redline requirements for rural-related work by the central authorities in the annual No 1 Central Document.
China's grain output in 2023 hit 695 billion kilograms, an increase of 8.88 billion kilograms compared to the previous year, setting a new historical record, according to an official at a news briefing on 23rd of Jan.
