Public toilet WeChat program a hit with users

A WeChat mini-program for public toilets in East China's Yangtze River Delta.

Chinese netizens have been rushing to check out a new WeChat mini-program for public toilets in East China's Yangtze River Delta, according to a local media report.

Developed by students and teachers from Shanghai Normal University's Tourism College, the program details the best public toilets in Shanghai and its neighboring provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui. It also serves as a tourist guide for these areas.

The program comes with a map function that informs users about the distance to his or her toilet of choice.

According to the Shanghai Observer, the program has been used by some 4,000 people since its launch on May 1.

"The design is not just meant to bring more convenience to people in search of a toilet, but it also showcases how China's toilets have been revolutionized and how well-managed they are," said Ma Jianyu, one of the teachers involved in the project.

Some of the listed toilets in Shanghai include one featuring curved mirrors in the Shanghai Glass Museum, one decorated as a cabin in Shanghai Gongqing Forest Park, one with views of the Huangpu River in Pudong.

As the program also allows users to submit recommendations, the list of toilets on the program has grown significantly since the launch. The team from Shanghai Normal University said that they will be working to feature the best toilets from not just the Yangtze River Delta region but across the entire country in the future.
