PLA Hong Kong garrison holds open day to celebrate anniversary

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison's Ngong Shuen Chau Naval Base is open on Sunday and Monday to local residents and students, as Monday marks the 22nd anniversary of Hong Kong returning to China.

The open days are expected to attract about 30,000 visitors. Celebration activities include a national flag-raising ceremony, march-past, military band performance and combat performance.

"I will be brave and tough just like the (PLA) soldiers when I grow up," Liu Jintao, 4, said after watching the performance at the open-day event.

This year, three naval vessels are also open for visitors, to help local residents have a better knowledge of the PLA Navy.

Visitors could also enjoy a feast of Chinese food at the open day.

Since Hong Kong's return to China in 1997, the PLA garrison has been holding such annual open-day events featuring abundant celebration activities.

This year's is the 31st open-day event since 1997 and about 781,000 visitors have participated in the events in the past 22 years.
