Now, hotel linens are smart enough to complain

A hotel in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has implanted thin, high-temperature-resistant chips in all its linens, including sheets, towels and duvet covers, with the help of the internet of things. The chips allow hotel guests to get information they need, China Central Television reported on Tuesday.

Hotel guests will be able to scan a QR code in their rooms to check the cleanness of the towels and sheets, which will contain information about when they were washed and changed.

"The chips, which are resistant to water and heat, are stitched onto each towel and quilt. Like an electronic ID card for hotel linens, it can record the number of all linens in the guest room and the times they are washed," said Jun Ze, manager of a hotel in Hangzhou's downtown Xiacheng district.

Staff members can access laundry information by scanning the chip with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader in their mobile phones, Jun added.

"Since all the linens are stitched with a chip connected with a smart bracelet, the bracelet will sound an alarm if a dishcloth is used to clean the toilet,"a staff member at another hotel in Xiacheng district said.

There are currently more than 250 hotels and inns in the district. Since December last year, the "transparent cleaning intelligent supervision system" has been tested in 12 hotels and by two hotel chains.

"First of all, information will be promptly reported to hotel managers if any irregular behavior by staff members is detected, and the hotel is required to make immediate rectification.

Meanwhile, the local hygiene supervision bureau will be informed and will conduct an on-site review immediately if the hotel fails to rectify the problem," said Huang Wei, an official of the Xiacheng bureau.
