China to basically built climate-adaptive society by 2035

China will significantly increase its ability to adapt to climate change by 2035, according to the newly released National Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation 2035.

The document focuses on overall guidance for the country's adaptation to climate change.

By 2035, the country’s climate change monitoring and early warning capabilities will reach the world advanced level, the document said.

A climate-adaptive society involves a basically mature climate risk management and prevention system, effective prevention and control of major and extraordinarily serious climate-related disaster risks, a more complete technology system and standard system for adaption to climate change, and a significantly improved ability among society to adapt to climate change, according to the document.

The strategy puts more emphasis on climate change monitoring, early warning and risk management. It puts forward the task of adaption to climate change covering eight major regions across the country and major strategic regions such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Yellow River Basin.

Adaptation tasks in key areas such as water resources, terrestrial ecosystems, oceans and coastal zones, agriculture and food security, health and public health, infrastructure and major projects, cities and human settlements have been clarified in the strategy.
