Beijing exhibition marks 600th anniversary of Temple of Heaven

An exhibition about the history and culture of the Temple of Heaven has opened to mark the 600th anniversary of the royal altar in Beijing.

The exhibition, located in the west wing of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, or the main building called Qiniandian, presented a display showing the maintenance, renovation, changes, protection and inheritance of the UNESCO world heritage site in southern Beijing.

Pictures of the Temple of Heaven from ancient books and historical photos of major events in modern times are among the items on display.

Built in 1420, the Temple of Heaven was where Ming and Qing Dynasty emperors worshipped heaven for good harvests. It was turned into a public park in 1918 after the demise of China's final dynasty.

It covers an area of 270 hectares and is one of the largest existing architectural complexes in the world.
