London Welcomes Highly Anticipated 15th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention to The ExCel

London UK, 21st October 2019 – Amidst the prolonged uncertainty and anxiety that UK businesses are facing due to Brexit, ExCel London opened its doors today as the official venue for the 15th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (WCEC).

The WCEC showcases the potential for business growth, innovation and stronger relationships between the UK and China. It was organised by the Chinese Business Association and is considered to be one of the most significant events on the Chinese trade calendar. With the aim of promoting and establishing positive global relationships, the annual WCEC attracted a number of high-profile attendees including China's ambassador to the UK, Mr Liu Xiaoming, Lord William Hague, Chair of the WCEC steering Committee, James Harding, Founder of Tortoise Media, who moderated the main discussion during the morning of WCEC on the theme of New World, New Opportunities, with panellists including Sir Martin Sorrell, Executive Chairman of S4 Capital and Lord Green, Chairman of Asia House.

Contributing his wealth of business knowledge and experience, Sir John Peace, Chairman of the 15th WCEC Steering Committee, greeted guests by delivering the opening address. He stated, “The 15th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention is not just an event, but a celebration of the golden age of UK and Chinese relations.” Sir John Peace highlighted that trade between the UK and China is growing - Twenty years ago, China ranked 15th among the UK’s trading partners. Today, China accounts for 7.5% of UK trade, with Chinese investment in the UK over the last 5 years exceeding that of the previous 30 years.  According to Sir John Peace, there will be continued high volume transactions and future cooperation between the UK and China.

Delivering on the promise to promote prosperity and opportunity in both the UK and China, the WCEC provided guests with a packed agenda, including speeches from Xu Yousheng, the Director of The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Sir Ken Olisa OBE, The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Liu Xiaoming, China's UK Ambassador.

The theme of this year's WCEC was 'Reaching to the World for Mutual Prosperity - New Opportunities with World Chinese Entrepreneurs'. In addition, the event explored the following areas: ‘China’s Belt and Road Initiative,’ ‘Looking Back Over the Last Century,’ 'Industrial Revolution 4.0’, ‘Chinese Business Leadership’ and ‘Investing in the UK.’ 

China’s UK Ambassador, Liu Xiaoming, commented: “As the world has undergone a major change over the past 100 years, global Chinese businessmen have not only seized new opportunities, but have created new patterns. The current spread of protectionism and unilateralism has caused uncertainty to rise significantly and the world economy urgently needs a new injection of vitality. Chinese businessmen should grasp new opportunities for reform and create a new pattern of shared development.”
