Ezhou Huahu Airport Starts Direct Cargo Flights to East Midlands

Ezhou Huahu International Airport, China’s first cargo-focused airport, has launched a direct cargo route to East Midlands Airport, UK.

Hubei International Logistics Airport Co., Ltd. announced on November 5 that Ezhou Huahu International Airport, China’s first cargo-focused airport, launched a direct cargo route to East Midlands Airport in the UK, according to CNS.

The route operates four weekly flights with a B747-400 freighter, offering over 30,000 tons of cargo capacity annually. Outbound cargo from Ezhou includes e-commerce goods, electronics, electromechanical equipment, and auto parts. Inbound shipments from the UK mainly carry electronics, auto parts, and fashion items such as clothing, shoes, and cosmetics.

East Midlands Airport, the UK’s second-largest cargo airport, acts as a logistics hub for the Midlands region. Its central location, advanced facilities, and strong logistics network make it ideal for handling international freight. Both airports serve multiple cities. Ezhou is located in central China’s Hubei province, near the cities of Huanggang, and Huangshi. The location was chosen for being almost equidistant from Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, while also being only an hour drive away from Wuhan. Meanwhile, the East Midlands Airport serves Nottingham, Derby, and Leicester in the UK.

From January to September, Ezhou Huahu International Airport handled 1.083 million tons of cargo, including 367,000 tons of international freight. This represents year-on-year growth of 58.2% and 137%, respectively. The airport also processed imports and exports worth RMB 114.68 billion(approximately £120.9 million), trading with partners in 174 countries.
