Are You Getting Enough Sleep Today?

The 2025 Chinese National Healthy Sleep White Paper shows that China’s average sleep duration is 6.85 hours, still below the recommended 7 hours.

On World Sleep Day, the “2025 Chinese National Healthy Sleep White Paper” was released on March 20. The survey revealed that 26% of respondents sleep less than six hours per night.

The study included participants aged 18 and above from 31 provinces across China, with over 150,000 volunteers taking part. The average sleep duration at night was 6.85 hours, an increase of six minutes compared to the previous year. However, it still falls short of the recommended seven hours, with most people going to bed after midnight. Additionally, 65% of respondents experience sleep problems one to two times per week.

Lifestyle and Sleep: Key Factors

The survey found that certain habits negatively impact sleep, such as drinking alcohol, eating late-night snacks, and consuming tea or coffee after 6 p.m.. College students tend to stay up late and wake up late, with longer phone usage leading to later bedtimes.

Obesity also affects sleep quality. Studies indicate that obese individuals sleep later, get less sleep, wake up more frequently at night, and experience poorer sleep quality.

Tips for Better Sleep

To improve sleep, experts suggest:
➤Gradually adjusting bedtime and wake-up time by 15 to 30 minutes every one to two days until reaching the target schedule. Once adjusted, maintaining a consistent routine is crucial.
➤Avoiding daytime naps or limiting them to less than 30 minutes.
➤Reducing stimulation before bed, such as intense exercise, video watching, or screen time. Instead, opt for meditation or reading.
➤Improving diet habits by avoiding caffeine, alcohol, or heavy meals before bedtime.

China’s Booming Sleep Health Industry

With growing health awareness and technological advancements, more people are shifting their focus from “being able to sleep” to “sleeping well.” As a result, China’s sleep health industry is expanding rapidly. The market size reached 495.58 billion yuan in 2023 and is projected to exceed 1 trillion yuan by 2030.
