The Timeless Charm of Fan Kuan’s Winter Wonderland

Among the masterpieces, Fan Kuan’s Snow-Covered Scene and Cold Forest is a defining work of landscape painting by the Song Dynasty.

The display and exchange event for A Comprehensive Collection of Song Dynasty Paintings, a volume within A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings, was successfully held at the Needham Research Institute and Cavonius Centre in Cambridge.

As a landmark publication showcasing the artistic achievements of the Song Dynasty, this volume features a carefully curated selection of invaluable works spanning various genres, including landscape, flower-and-bird, and figure painting.

Among the masterpieces of Song Dynasty painting, Snow-Covered Scene and Cold Forest (《雪景寒林图》) by Shaanxi painter Fan Kuan (now housed in the Tianjin Museum) stands as a paragon of artistic excellence.

An Influential Painter

This monumental hanging scroll, measuring nearly two meters in height and 1.6 meters in width, consists of three silk panels. As its name suggests, the painting captures the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Qinling Mountains in the aftermath of snowfall, depicting withered trees and a dense, wintry forest.

Fan Kuan, a leading figure of the Northern Landscape school, profoundly influenced later generations with his majestic and imposing depictions of northern China’s landscapes.

According to Yao Yang, director of the Tianjin Museum, the renowned Qing Dynasty collector An Qi once extolled this work in his book Moyuan Huiguan. An called it “the supreme masterpiece of Song Dynasty painting.” While artistic evaluations are subjective and shaped by the perspectives of appraisers, such praise underscores the painting’s pivotal status in the history of Chinese art.
