Stay Fit & Healthy: China Push for Weight Management

The life expectancy of Chinese residents has reached 79 years, good weight management helps people live a high-quality life.

China’s average life expectancy reached 79 years in 2024, marking a 0.4-year increase from 2023. Notably, eight provinces have now exceeded an average life expectancy of 80 years.

China’s Life Expectancy Reaches 79

According to Lei Haichao, head of the National Health Commission (NHC), life expectancy in China has risen by 1.7 years compared to 2019, reflecting significant progress over the past five years. Among the regions leading this trend, the three municipalities—Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai—along with provinces such as Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, have all surpassed the 80-year mark.

Expanding Mental Health Services

To improve mental health support, every prefecture-level city in China is set to establish psychological and sleep clinics by the end of 2024. Additionally, the “12356” mental health hotline will be promoted nationwide to provide accessible psychological assistance and support services.

Nationwide Weight Management Initiative

Lei also highlighted a three-year nationwide campaign aimed at promoting weight management and encouraging a healthier lifestyle. This initiative focuses on raising awareness about balanced nutrition, active exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Taking Shanghai as an example, the city plans to develop a “Weight Management Health Guide” for its 25 million residents. A team of clinical, nutrition, public health, and sports health experts will compile the guide, covering aspects such as diet control, exercise routines, sleep hygiene, and medical interventions. Moreover, AI technology will be leveraged to enhance the effectiveness of personalized weight management.

Expert Advice on Sustainable Weight Management

Health experts recommend maintaning a balanced diet, where carbohydrates account for approximately 50% of daily calorie intake. Eating until 70% full is suggested for long-term weight control. A regular sleep schedule is also crucial, as staying up late and an irregular lifestyle can lead to unhealthy eating habits and weight gain.
