【Today’s Catchword】TikTok Refugees 101: Morning C, Evening A

TikTok users in the USA are flooding onto Chinese social media Red Note, referring to themselves as TikTok Refugees

Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu (小红书, also called “Red Note”) has skyrocketed to the top of app stores around the world in January. The rapid rise in international users is mainly spurned by the concern that TikTok will banned in the U.S. As American and other international users arrived on Red Note, there were many new phrases coined and unique interactions between long-term Chinese users and the new ‘refugees’.

The phrase “Morning A, Evening C” has become a buzzing trend on Red Note, a Chinese social media platform. It’s a fun way to highlight the time zone difference between Chinese users and the influx of American users—likely fleeing TikTok due to the ban in the U.S.

Chinese users have been rolling out the welcome mat in the quirkiest ways, greeting newcomers with lines like:

“If you like Chinese, we kiss kiss; if you hate Chinese, we punch punch.”

“MF=My friends”.

“CUNT=See you next time”.

This blend of humour and hospitality has turned Red Note into a space filled with playful vibes and curious cultural exchanges.

What’s more, new trends are emerging, including sharing cute pet pictures as a “cat tax”, and pitching in to help each other with English and math homework, called “global teamwork”. It’s like a big, internet-wide slumber party where everyone is invited!

Of course, not everything is perfect. With the platform’s rising popularity, a few sneaky scammers have popped up, trying to rain on the parade. But no worries—sticking to verified accounts keeps the fun going.

Who would have known an App could bring the world together one meme, pet pic, and silly greeting at a time?
