Sol Bound I by Reuko Opens at Frameless London

The new immersive Sol Bound I, by Oslo-based artist Reuko with an original score by Welsh composer Alex Mills, has opened at Frameless London.

It offers visitors the opportunity to step away from the city’s pace and engage with a digitally constructed natural environment. Sol Bound I is presented in the venue’s Blank Canvas gallery and examines the relationship between humans and the natural world.

The exhibition arrives amid growing public and academic discussion around declining “nature connectedness”, the emotional and psychological bond between people and their environment. By placing audiences within large-scale projections of landscapes accompanied by an evolving soundscape, the work seeks to create conditions for reflection on that relationship.

Combining drone footage of remote terrains with digital particle simulations, Sol Bound I unfolds as a sequence of environments including forests, coastlines, and expansive ecosystems. Filmed over several years across regions such as Norway and Iceland, the imagery presents viewpoints that are often inaccessible at ground level and highlights patterns within weather systems and natural formations.

Reuko traces the origins of the project to a childhood fascination with storms and atmospheric change, experiences that shaped his awareness of being part of a wider ecological system. After spending a decade in the video game industry developing virtual environments, he began to turn his focus back to physical landscapes, using his technical background to explore new ways of representing them.

In this context, technology functions not as a replacement for nature but as a means of reframing how it can be perceived. Drone cinematography and digital visualisation are used to reveal structures and movements within landscapes, bringing geographically distant locations into an urban gallery setting.

Sound is integral to the installation’s structure. Composer Alex Mills developed the score in close collaboration with the artist, approaching it as a gradual sonic progression that mirrors the visual shifts. Drawing on strings, electronic textures, and subtle environmental references, the music provides an emotional framework while allowing viewers space for individual interpretation.

Mills joined the project during its final stages, refining the interaction between sound and image through an iterative process. He has described the approach as one of reduction, removing excess layers so the work could maintain a sense of openness and accommodate a multisensory experience.

Rather than following a linear storyline, the installation operates as a continuous loop that reflects cyclical processes in nature. As landscapes evolve, traces of human presence appear, suggesting interdependence between people and the environments they inhabit.

Positioned as the first instalment in an ongoing series, Sol Bound I signals future explorations of diverse ecological regions and the broader intersection of immersive art and wellbeing. However, within the gallery space, its immediate effect is to provide a quieter environment that contrasts with the surrounding urban context.

In central London, the installation ultimately frames nature as a system, where viewers are invited to consider themselves part of, encouraging a pause in the city’s flow and a reconsideration of how natural environments are experienced today.
