Wushan’s Shennyu Escalator: Scenic Views and Faster Commutes

The Shennyu Escalator in Wushan County, southwest China’s Chongqing, stretches 905 meters and rises over 240 meters, connecting key city areas.

The Shennyu Escalator in Wushan County, southwest China’s Chongqing, has begun trial operation. This giant escalator stretches 905 meters in length and rises over 240 meters, making it one of the longest urban escalators in the world. It includes 21 escalators and 8 elevators, linking the upper and lower sections of Shennyu Avenue.

Before the escalator opened, travelling between the two sections could take nearly an hour. Now, the journey takes about 20 minutes. In addition, the escalator connects key locations such as government offices, hospitals, schools, ferry terminals, shopping areas, and residential neighbourhoods. Together, these form a convenient “urban life corridor” for locals.

During the Lunar New Year holiday, the escalator attracted large crowds. Residents and visitors enjoyed both the ease of travel and the unique experience of riding a scenic urban escalator. Many passengers also appreciated the view of the Yangtze River along the way.

Tickets cost only 3 yuan (about £0.33) per ride. Each ride is valid for one hour, enough time to explore the surroundings or simply enjoy the journey.
