China’s Lunar New Year Travel Hotspots for Foreign Visitors

Explore China’s top Lunar New Year travel hotspots. From major cities to hidden gems, see where foreign visitors are heading this festive season.

According to Chinese online travel platform Qunar, bookings for flights to China during the Lunar New Year have risen by nearly 30% compared to last year. Popular destinations include major cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xiamen, Harbin, Haikou, Chongqing, and Shenyang.

But it’s not just big cities that attract visitors. Smaller Chinese cities are also gaining attention. Foreign travellers are booking trips to places like Jining, Rizhao, Xuzhou, Wanzhou, Lianyungang, Anqing, Altay, Lüliang, Nyingchi, Qionghai, Yulin, Hailar, Yining, Yibin, Jixi, Jiamusi, and Zhaotong. Guilin and Datong stand out, with bookings quadrupling from last year. Other cities seeing strong growth include Xishuangbanna, Hohhot, Lanzhou, Zhanjiang, and Mangshi, where bookings more than doubled. Meanwhile, bookings to Yancheng, Yuncheng, and Liuzhou increased by over 100%.

Travellers come from all over the world. Leading countries include South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, the United States, and Malaysia. Some countries show dramatic growth: Argentine travellers booked nine times more flights than last year, while Dutch travellers increased bookings by over eight times. European countries like Italy and France also saw more than triple the number of travellers compared to last year.

For Chinese travellers, the top ten destinations during the Lunar New Year are Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Haikou, Kunming, Hangzhou, Sanya, and Chongqing.
