China’s Next Stage | Green Energy in 2025: From EVs to Wind and Solar

China’s 2025 data show steady gains in green energy, with growth in EVs, wind and solar power, and broader progress in the green economy and clean energy transition.

China released its official economic results for 2025 on the 19th, showing strong growth in green electricity, clean energy, and the green economy, CNS reported.

In 2025, China accelerated the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system. Power generation from major clean energy sources, including hydropower, nuclear, wind, and solar, rose by 8.8 per cent year on year. At the same time, the share of non-fossil energy in total energy consumption increased by about two percentage points. Output of green energy equipment and green materials also recorded rapid growth.

Meanwhile, the competitiveness of the new energy industry continued to improve. Annual production and sales of new energy vehicles both exceeded 16 million units. New energy vehicles accounted for more than 50 per cent of all new car sales in the domestic market. As a result, greener production methods and low-carbon lifestyles became more widespread.

In addition, traditional industries made clear progress in green transformation. According to official data, energy consumption per unit of value added declined notably in major energy-intensive sectors, including building materials, steel, and non-ferrous metals.

Alongside these developments, Chinese authorities released new guidance in 2025 to promote the development of zero-carbon factories. The policy targets sectors such as automobiles, batteries, solar, electronics, light industry, machinery, and data infrastructure, with pilot projects planned by 2027.

Overall, China made further advances in innovation-driven development, industrial upgrading, digital empowerment, and green transition in 2025. New growth drivers moved from policy goals to practical results, supporting higher-quality and more sustainable economic growth.
